Food Finds: New York City Part 1

I love discovering new cuisine when traveling, and my number one rule is to always eat locally. New York City has numerous options, in every part of the city, and we aimed to try as much as we could! What I love about New York is you can wake up for a pastry, walk to the Thai restaurant for lunch, and finish the night with a bowl of pasta. What the life! The options are limitless, and I can honestly say we did not have a bad meal. It can also be overwhelming trying to pick somewhere to eat, so today I thought I would share some of our favorite spots for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Part 2 will include brunch and snacks!

Breakfast:

We ate a couple of breakfasts at the hotel (since they were free) and we were waiting for the rain to clear out. On our last full day we walked to Central Park and ate at SaraBeth's right off Park Street. Their omelets are huge, and the scones delicious. Keep in mind we did go in our workout clothes, and the place is a little nicer than that :) You are also next to the Plaza, which is also amazing!

On Sunday we were heading to the Financial District, and the weather was a little dreary. We wanted something quaint and cozy, so this French Cafe was perfect!

I had the avocado toast and Phil had a brioche sandwich with eggs and bacon. We split a chocolate croissant, which was heavenly. This was a great breakfast to keep us full as we visited the World Trade Center Museum, you will spend greater than 2 hours there as a heads up.

Lunch:

We both love Thai food, and finding a good restaurant was crucial. Especially since everyone suggested we try Thai food at least once. Pure Thai Cookhouse in Hells Kitchen was exactly what we needed, and I could have eaten one of everything off the menu. Note most Thai restaurants we looked at, whether din sum or noodle bars, don't take reservations and are first come first serve. Lunch was the best time to visit without a long wait.

We tried the veggie dumplings, steamed pork buns, Pad Kee Moa with chicken, and shrimp/chicken pot stickers.

The service was fast, and the atmosphere was very fun. This was probably one of our favorite meals!

The day we arrived, the weather was perfect for a trip on the ferry to Smorgasburg. This food festival is held from March to October on Saturdays and Sundays in Brooklyn. This is every foodie's dream, and a great way to taste test your way through New York on the weekends. We found oysters, pizza, ice cream sandwiches, all within the first two hours.

On our last full day we walked towards the FlatIron Building and Peloton Studio. I had never been to Chelsea, and Chelsea Market was on Phil's list of must do things. If I lived on that side of town, I would never leave and now see why Phil was so excited. You have your pick of Italian, French, American, Asian, etc all in one place. We walked through trying to decided on lunch, and ultimately stopped at the Seafood Market. Here you could pick out your oysters, Lobster rolls, New England Chowder bowls, and sushi rolls.

Dinner:

If you think you won't be hungry for dinner after your breakfast and lunch, think again. You will walk everywhere, and by 5 pm want to join in on happy hours and dinner time within the city.

On Saturday night we went to Crave Fish Market, and kicked off with the best margaritas. We then had tuna poke, spare ribs, and of course, oysters to start with. The main dishes are very large, and easily can be split between two people. We shared the fish special with miso dressing, large asparagus, and cheesy cauliflower.

The Italian restaurant we visited was so good the first time, we went back on our last dinner in town. La Pecora Bianca's homemade pasta was to die for, and their atmosphere was sophisticated but cozy.

Of course we started with a meat and cheese board, and the meatballs on the second night. For the main course, we each had a homemade pasta dish and shared a bottle of wine (the best way to keep drink prices somewhat reasonable). Desert was a chocolate pudding one night, and then an ice cream style sandwich but with wafer cookies the second time around.

These two dinners were our favorite, and the time I remembered to take pictures. Before Broadway, we went to a small Italian restaurant near the theater. The best dinner tip: If you are going to a Broadway show, eat near Times Square. When you call to make your reservation, let them know you which show you are seeing and ask them what time they suggest you get there to get to the show on time.
