Every once in a while, my husband surprises me with a fun date night, and this past weekend was no exception. Friday night we got dressed up, met up with friends for a drink, and headed to the Oak Table on Main Street.

Before sitting down to dinner, we got a chance to have a drink at the Capital City Club with friends where we enjoyed beautiful views and wonderful conversation. They had to head to a Christmas party, so to the Oak Table we went! Once there we took a look at their fun cocktail menu, but ultimately settled on a glass of sauvignon blanc for each of us followed by a Malbec for our meal. Usually wine is our drink of choice but we can vouch for the drinks being very well made here. Time came to start with an appetizer and if you know us, we can't begin without the cheese board. We are big fans of testing these at each restaurant we visit, and then repeating when we come back. Little tip, the cheese board is actually on the dessert menu, but you can order it ahead of your meal.

Dinner never disappoints when we go; with rotating menus, you are always sure to find something you will enjoy eating. Phil got the "Cider Braised Carolina Heritage Pork" and each bite melted in your mouth. He didn't need a knife to cut the pork, that's how perfectly tender it came out. It was paired with the chestnut bread pudding, parsnip apple puree, and Brussel sprouts roasted with bacon, all topped with cider mustard jus; each bite was full of flavor.

I went with the pan seared market catch that features the North Carolina Mackerel topped with the perfect blend of winter vegetables: carrots, beet chips, and pickled mushrooms. This fish tasted almost grilled with the spices used, and paired so well with the root vegetables. Normally I like fish with more summer like vegetables, but this a perfect blend of autumn and winter together. Of course, no trip to Oak Table is complete without the truffle frites. You will have plenty of food to fill you up, but trust us, this is our favorite side and you must try at least once.

Not only is the food delicious, but the restaurant itself is beautiful. The decorations are elegant, and the woodwork is very well crafted. This gem sits right across the street from the State House, so as you sit at the bar waiting for your table or just grabbing a drink after work, you have a wonderful view of our state capital.

Our night ended with their ice cream flight. I was so excited about dessert I didn't get a chance to snap a picture, but each homemade flavor was the perfect blend of savory and sweet (which is their ice cream specialty). Overall, the night was perfect and we were able to say cheers to another successful date night at the Oak Table. How has your experience there been? Have a favorite drink or dish off their menu?

Love,

Jess
